Ecologists Warn the Planet is Running Short of Water

January 22, 2009, Timesonline --- A swelling global population, changing diets and mankind's expanding "water footprint" could be bringing an end to the era of cheap water.

The warnings, in an annual report by the Pacific Institute in California, come as ecologists have begun adopting the term "peak ecological water" --- the point where, like the concept of "peak oil", the world has to confront a natural limit on something once considered virtually infinite: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/environment/article5562906.ece

Effective Water and Resource Management is a Way to Keep Operational Costs Down

December 1, 2008, Atlanta, GA --- Companies should plan and consider strategies of boosting their water and resource management efficiency and environmental performance, as well as keep operational costs down in the face of global economic challenges.

Companies face increasing scrutiny and pressure to narrow the gap in the governance and performance of their operations, supply chains, and that of their suppliers across the global marketplace. Growing legislation is driving businesses to adopt more effective water and resource management practices and methods with directors being held personally liable for the environmental conduct of their companies. In the past years, the courts have handed out fines, community service and even imprisonment for company directors for non compliance to legislation.

With water, energy and material costs continuing to rise and changes in the economy, there has never been a better time to lead the way in using resources wisely, improving resource management efficiency, mitigating risks, eliminating waste, and raising environmental standards.  The savvy business leader recognizes that water and resource management efficiency is not an expense but a money saving and business risk mitigation measure to be embraced and a responsibility that should be shared between employers and employees to maximize impact.

It is very important for businesses to take steps to show their commitment to improving environmental performance including: reducing water usage and water waste, and increase water reuse and recycling, both financial and environmental benefits can be achieved. Effective water and resource management can be crucial to saving companies money in the face of economic recession. Productivity measures can be the answer to cutting costs and improving profits. Therefore,  management efficiency has become a business imperative in the current economic climate.

With Water Shortages Emerging Worldwide, Companies Need To Raise Water Productivity

October 1, 2008, New York, NY (H2oAlliance Global) --- Since many companies use large amounts of freshwater to produce goods and services, while producing large amounts of  waste and recycled water, a comprehensive resource efficiency and water risk strategy is needed.

As emerging industries and economic growth increase competition for freshwater, local and regional water resources will be impacted. In addition, significant changes in agricultural systems, management practices, and water demand have the potential to negatively affect water supply and water quality. Finally, the developed and developing countries will continue to face freshwater shortages, and new management challenges will emerge due to the climate changes.

A comprehensive water and resource management program which includes efficient processes, risk and resource management is crucial to companies overall performance, and is now being used in portfolio analysis. Effective water and resource management plans and practices combined with new-tech solutions have proven to conserve water, energy and materials, improve OEE, minimize waste, boost profits, and reduce the burden on the environment. Integrated planning and easy to use management tools are crucial to improving resource management efficiency, particularly in water scarce areas. H2oAlliance's customized water management programs and new-tech tools are designed to improve companies' resource management efficiency.

H2oAlliance's experts can design customized water management programs and provide technologies that will optimize resource management efficiency. These programs and technologies are used in many industries and countries today where every liter of water saved improves productivity, and therefore profitability while reducing the burden on the environment.

Finally, business leaders must work together to improve resource efficiency worldwide. Productivity is a key to establishing sustainable water management plans and policies. Efficiency will reduce demand for freshwater, optimize the use of materials and energy, diminish waste, and mitigate risks.

Resource efficiency is correlated to corporate wealth and community health. Businesses and communities are co-dependant and cannot be sustained unless they manage their resources more effectively. No one company, organization, community, government or NGO can solve water-related problems alone. Therefore, we must work together. Companies seeking to tangible ways to improve their resource management plans and polices, can join the H2oAlliance today. Together, we can make a difference locally, nationally and globally in communities we serve.

For companies seeking new-tech solutions to improve their water productivity, H2oAlliance has developed a partner program entitled 'Get more out of Water', which provides proven tools and methods to improve resource efficiency. The program goal is to increase OEE within one year. All that is required from companies is a commitment to test the REMS (Resource Efficiency Management System) side-by-side with their existing system for 12-months. Partners and clientele can use REMS solution for a reduced rate for up to one year.

H2oAlliance Promotes Efficiencies (OEE) in its 'Water Quest'

August 1, 2008, Atlanta , GA --- H2oAlliance launched a new program to improve industrial OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness), and reduce freshwater demand on a local level.

Companies can join the program in North America, Europe, South America, Middle East, Asia, Australia, and Russia. The program will soon be available through United Nations Development Programme PPP's (Public Private Partnership) in Africa, and over 160 countries worldwide. It supports UNDP's (www.UNDP.org) efforts in combating the escalating freshwater crisis across the developing and developed countries.

Freshwater stress and contamination have forced businesses to develop new and alternative process management solutions, methods, strategies, and policies. H2oAlliance's goal is to help companies improve their OEE by an average of 2%, and reduce freshwater usage within the first year. Increased OEE can have major impact in overall productivity and profitability, especially in water-scarce regions, areas affected by droughts and floods, and with contaminated water sources. H2oAlliance provides a system to explain why water, chemicals and energy are wasted, and provides solutions on how to improve source, treated, circulating, and waste water management efficiency.

H2oAlliance's multinational and high-tech industrial design and engineering team have acquired nanosensor technology to incorporate it as a part of their OEE concept in their own industries. Electro-chemistry shows phenomena that can be seen with no other method. Indices bring all the information onto one display and the history-data-tool facilitates analyzing the trends. With nanosensor technology our experts are able to tackle the possible process disturbances better and faster. The nanosensor technology supplements existing technologies and knowledge. We plan to further develop and customize this unique technology and methods. In addition, nanosensor technology offers H2oAlliance partners possibilities to grow as a provider of solutions for process water circulation and wastewater management in most industries worldwide.

Paper Mills are Banking on Water Quality to boost OEE and Profits

January 25, 2008, Atlanta, GA - - - Paper mills report an average of 4% increase in OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) by simply focusing on water quality. A small investment in a simple liquid monitoring system has proven to be a great success in 40 paper mills across Europe and the Americas.

"The key to our success during the past eight years has been the ability to analyze electrochemistry in large volumes of liquids, and process data effectively in real-time in order to detect abnormalities and changes in water quality. The system predicts problems, eliminates risks and costs associated with unforeseen process interruptions, and ensures sufficient time to take corrective action", according to Sakari Laitinen, H2oAlliance.

On average, paper mills consume about 50 cubic meters of freshwater per ton of paper or pulp produced. Since the pulp and paper industry uses so much water, and produces so much wastewater and recycling water, controlling water quality throughout the production process is crucial to avoid and eliminate problems, boost bottom-line profits, and reduce the burden on the environment.

Constant water quality monitoring is critical in every papermill. Raw, treated and waste water quality varies from place to place, depending on the condition of the source water from which it is drawn, and the treatment it receives.

The amount of chemical agent added is critical for optimum performance. Both underdosing and overdosing of the chemical agent affect the water quality and leads to poor performance. Because the water characteristics and chemical agent demand are constantly changing, it is essential to continuously monitor electrochemistry in liquids to optimize the chemical dosage. Real-time analysis of the water quality and the performance of a chemical agent allows adjustment of a chemical dosage at all times, and development of a feed optimization system.

Real-time electrochemical liquid analysis offers a series of advantages that lead to higher OEE including; increased accuracy and detection limits; low cost of implementation; minimizes waste and by-product formation; savings of water, energy and chemicals. A small investment in these customized liquid monitoring systems can easily pay for itself within a year, push profits and company valuations to higher levels.
